Salzburg is one of Austria‘s many beautiful cities and is located around the middle of the country close to the German border. It has some special elements which make it great for Instagram and photography, such as the Hohensalzburg Fortress, a beautiful Historic Centre, hills, mountains, colourful facades and beautiful churches. In this post, you’ll find various spots around the city, which are great for Instagram and photography, as well as the location on Google Maps and the best time to take photographs at this location. Here are 8 top and must-visit spots in Salzburg for Instagram and Photography.

TIP
Purchase a Salzburg Card which provides free entry to many of the city’s top attractions, including the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart Residence, Sound of Music World and more.

1. Museum der Moderne viewpoint

From outside the “Museum der Moderne” you get the view below over the Old Town and towards the Hohensalzburg Fortress. You don’t have to enter the museum to get this view. Also, consider coming here around the blue hour for a nice perspective and light.

OUR TOP TIP
This is probably our favourite spot in the city. The views during the blue hour are very impressive (see the first photo). I have also seen photographs of this in the winter with lots of snow on the rooftops and it looks quite spectacular.

2. Getreidegasse (street)

This is one of the most beautiful streets in the city and is especially nice at Christmas. The street is cobbled and pedestrian-only, and the shops and businesses lining the street all have interesting signs sticking out. It can get quite busy along this street, so consider coming here early morning if you want it all to yourself.

3. Hohensalzburg Fortress

Salzburg Fortress (Hohensalzburg) provides one of the highest and best viewpoints of the city. Getting to the fortress is also fun and you can either walk up or take the funicular to it. While at the castle and as well as the viewpoint seen below, you’ll find other photo opportunities around the fortress.

5. Near Kapuzinerkloster Monastery

One of my favourite views of the city is from the gardens near the Kapuzinerkloster Monastery. You can easily walk up to this location from Linzer Gasse, and from this perspective, you will sometimes see mountains in the background behind the city.

6. Imbergstiege (a path)

There’s a path called “Imbergstiege” nicknamed locally as the “Dark Staircase” that leads down from the park at the Kapuzinerkloster Monastery (mentioned above). Along this path are several nice spots for getting Instagram photographs such as below.

7. Along the Salzach River

Along the Salzach River near the “Protestant parish Salzburg Christ Church” you can get a nice perspective of the city, which adds lots of layers from the river at the bottom, to the castle at the top. This angle would make for a great sunset, or to take pictures of during the autumn.

8. Domplatz

Domplatz is one of the main squares in the Old Town and the location of Salzburg Cathedral. I have only explored this area at Christmas, but you should be able to capture nice images here at all times of the year, with the monument and surrounding architecture and the cathedral in the background.

9. Mirabell Gardens

Mirabell Gardens is a spot that I’ve often seen on Instagram. Unfortunately, I haven’t made it to this location yet but based on photos of it it is definitely a place worth checking out. I would imagine that when visiting in the Spring and Summer months you’ll get to enjoy wonderful flower arrangements such as seen below. This is something that you would find in other places in Austria such as at the schönbrunn in Vienna.
