Vienna is possibly one of the most beautiful cities to explore at night, and this is especially true when exploring the historic districts and palaces. But should you not want to explore, but would prefer a more relaxing or entertaining experience then Vienna has that too. From seeing historic landmarks, shows, to romantic walks, here are our suggestions of the best things to see and do in Vienna at night.
Explore the Innere Stadt
The Innere Stadt is Vienna’s historic district. It includes the 1st district of the city and looping around the outside of it is the Ringstrasse boulevard. Around the boulevard and within you’ll find incredible landmarks such as Stephansdom, Rathaus, The Austrian Parliament, as well as cute cobbled streets. This particular part of Vienna looks extremely pretty at night and is also quite romantic so great for couples. For those that like photography you’ll also find heaps of great picture spots. Visit Best Instagram and Photography Spots in Vienna for the best locations in the city.
See a show
Famous for its opera and other musical performances seeing a show in Vienna is a top activity to do at night. From Mozart performances, opera and much more. To buy tickets you’ll find various ticket merchants close to Stephansplatz as well as Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera). Alternatively visit GetYouGuide which has options for Musikverein Concert Hall, Mozart & Strauss Concert and Vienna Residence Orchestra.
Go on a photo walk
There’s no shortage of incredible photography spots in Vienna and these will be sure to keep you busy at night. Start around Karlskirche which during the warmer months has a water feature and often perfect reflections. Then venture further into the city towards Stephansplatz. Around this area you’ll find beautiful classic cobbled streets and heaps more pictures ops. Want to improve your night photography? See our tips.
Have a romantic dinner
As can be expected from a city like Vienna you’ll find lots of nice restaurants. A few favourites of ours include Motto am Fluss (along the canals), Das LOFT and SKY Cafe to name just a few ideas. One thing that’s very important when visiting Vienna is that you book restaurants in advance. You can of course still get bookings on the day for many places but not necessarily your first choice or the really popular places.
See the Christmas lights (December)
A magical and traditional city, Vienna comes with plenty of charm over Christmas. Complete with a buzzing atmosphere you’ll find Christmas markets and stalls all over the city as well as plenty of lights and decorations. At night is the best time to see and also photograph these lights as there’ll be more contrast against the night sky.
Enjoy drinks along the canal
Along the Vienna canals, you’ll find various bars. These have a fantastic atmosphere and as well as visiting during the day they are also great to visit at night. You’ll find lots of different ones, some of which include deckchairs to really relax and unwind. A few options include Tel Aviv Beach, Adria and Strandbar Herrmann.
Should you not want to visit a bar, then what a lot of the locals do is grab some drinks from a local store and then sit by the side of the water and enjoy the atmosphere that way.
Enjoy a Boat ride
Another nice way to experience the Vienna canals is to go on a boat ride such as on an evening dinner cruise. These can include a 3-course meal and sparkling aperitif. Whilst on your ride you can then enjoy views of the city from the water as your cruise along.
Relax at a rooftop bar
A wonderful way to watch the day turn into night is to visit a rooftop bar. Vienna has various of these in the city, including Das LOFT, Café Bar Bloom and Der Dachboden (at 25hours Hotel). From these places you’ll get to enjoy wonderful views over the city whilst sipping a delicious cocktail. We particularly rate Der Dachboden for a fun evening where the atmosphere can be especially impressive. For next-level views then Das LOFT at Sofitel is a good choice. Of course, if you want a table then be sure to contact them in advance as these popular places will fill up fast.
Head to the clubs
There are various clubs (and bars) that are great for those looking for a big night out. Some of the options include Volksgarten, Flex and Club Schwarzenberg. When planning your night it’s worth checking the opening times as many of these open very late but are also open until the early hours of the morning. To keep you busy until then why not check out the rooftop bars mentioned above to start your evening and then when ready head over to the club?
Visit the Prater
Prater is perfect for families or those just after a thrill. This part of Vienna is full of theme park rides including Wiener Riesenrad (The Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel), which one the world’s oldest Ferris wheels. Other rides that you’ll find at Prater include the Alt Wiener Ghost Train, Black Mamba, Boomerang to name a few. Visit praterwien.com/en/attractions to see more.
